Sivananda Yoga
Classical and holistic โ posture, breath, relaxation, and philosophy as one.
About Sivananda Yoga
Sivananda is a classical, holistic approach taught through a consistent 'open class' structure that includes pranayama, Sun Salutations, a sequence of 12 foundational postures, and deep relaxation, alongside lifestyle and philosophical teachings rooted in the five points of yoga.
Yoga Wheel Scores
The 12-posture sequence covers the main movement planes systematically without extreme demands.
Sun Salutations and standing postures build general body-weight strength.
Core postures include tree and other standing balances at moderate challenge.
Pranayama is a dedicated segment of every class โ not an afterthought.
Meditation, chanting, and philosophical study integrate throughout, making mind cultivation central.
History & Origins
The international Sivananda centre network was established by Swami Vishnudevananda, a disciple of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, who founded centres in the West beginning in 1959. The tradition emphasises the classical 'five points of yoga' framework: proper exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet, and positive thinking.
